Is your Apple watch battery normal?
Apple is the only watch brand that publishes a capacity threshold and lets you read your own battery health on the device. That makes the question much easier to settle here than on any other brand: there is a number, and there is a line.
What Apple will actually tell you
On ageing: Apple designs its watch batteries to retain up to 80% of original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles — roughly two and a half to three years at one charge a day. Below 80% is a service case: free under AppleCare+, $99 without it, and covered by warranty if the battery is defective.
Reading battery health yourself: Settings → Battery → Battery Health on the watch shows maximum capacity as a percentage.
Apple's battery service termsWhat to change on a Apple, biggest saving first
Ordered by what it actually saves. Brand guidance usually is not — which is how “turn off music” ends up above “disable always-on” in a manual.
- Check Battery Health on the watch firstApple is the only brand that gives you a number, and below 80% of original capacity is its own service threshold — so one reading settles the question no other brand lets you ask.
- Turn the always-on display offThe biggest controllable consumer, as on every other watch.
- Reduce workout GPS use and background app refreshContinuous GPS is the heaviest thing an Apple Watch does short of LTE.
- Turn off LTE if you carry your phone anywayA cellular watch searching for signal away from its phone is the worst case for runtime.
Storing, charging and replacing
Storing itnot published by the brand
Apple publishes no watch-specific storage charge range. Its general device guidance is to store at around half charge rather than full or empty, and to avoid heat. Leaving a watch on a charger at 100% for long periods is the pattern that adaptive charging features exist to avoid.
Charging itnot published by the brand
Apple Watch charges on a magnetic puck. Fast charging is model-dependent and needs both a compatible charger and cable, so a watch that seems slow to charge may simply be on a non-fast-charge setup rather than losing capacity.
Replacing the battery
Apple services the battery rather than selling a replacement part. If capacity has dropped below 80% it is covered at no extra charge under AppleCare+, and $99 without it — US pricing, and Apple notes prices and terms vary. A defective battery is also covered by the standard one-year warranty (two years for Edition models).
What the warranty covers
Apple’s one-year warranty includes service for a defective battery, and AppleCare+ covers service once capacity falls below 80%. Because Apple publishes the 80%-at-1000-cycles design figure and shows capacity on the device, an Apple owner is in the unusual position of being able to check the thing the policy is written around before contacting anyone.
Apple battery questions
- Where do I find battery health on an Apple Watch?
- Settings → Battery → Battery Health on the watch itself. It shows maximum capacity as a percentage of original. Below 80% is Apple’s own service threshold, so this single reading answers the question that every other brand leaves open.
- How many years should an Apple Watch battery last?
- Apple designs the battery to retain up to 80% of original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles. At roughly one charge a day that is about two and a half to three years before the watch reaches the point Apple itself calls a service case.
- Is 85% capacity after two years normal?
- It is close to what Apple’s own design figure implies over that many cycles. A watch in the mid-to-high 80s at two years is behaving as designed; the number worth watching is 80%, because that is where Apple’s policy changes.
This is general information, not a diagnosis: it compares one figure you have given us against the runtime the manufacturer publishes, and we cannot measure your battery. Your manufacturer or an authorised service centre is the only place that can test it. Service pricing and warranty terms vary by country and change over time — treat the figures here as a starting point and confirm them with Apple for your own model.
